Self-introduction and interest in engineering

Subject: Self-introduction

Dear Prof Blackstone,

I hope this email finds you well. My name is Treven Fong and I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Prior to this, I completed a diploma in Digital and Precision Engineering, where I gained fundamental knowledge in the field of engineering. I am particularly interested in developing infrastructure solutions that enhance urban living while tackling challenges such as climate change and sustainable development. Hands-on lab experiments and projects have allowed me to experience the practical applications of engineering, which further fuel my passion for the field.

Beyond academics, I enjoy playing team strategy games like League of Legends and Counter-Strike. These games require effective collaboration and communication, and I often take the initiative to voice strategies and adapt to dynamic situations. Additionally, I enjoy single-player games that involve critical thinking, such as puzzle-solving games, which sharpen my decision-making and motor skills. These hobbies complement my growth as an aspiring engineer by fostering teamwork, adaptability, and problem-solving skills.

One communication strength which I possess is my ability to convey information to my peers with clarity and conciseness. During my time in NYP, I was responsible for preparing a technical report and presenting it to my class. I did my best in ensuring that the report was precise and well-structured, allowing my classmates to fully understand the objectives. Despite being able to voice myself in front of my close circle of friends, I noticed that I have trouble handling public speaking under pressure. I realise that the nervousness affected the fluidity of my delivery, and i aim to improve my confidence in such situations.

Through this module, my first goal is to enhance my public speaking skills to deliver presentations with more confidence and clarity. My second goal is to develop stronger technical writing skills to convey project ideas and reports more effectively. Both of which will be crucial for my future as a civil engineer.

Thank you, Professor, for taking the time to read my email. I am excited to learn from you and grow not only as an aspiring engineer but also as an individual. I look forward to develop my skills and gain valuable insights under your guidance in this module.

Yours sincerely,

Treven Fong
